By a West Michigan Photographer Who Gets It

If you’re part of the Class of 2025 and wondering how to make your senior pictures stand out—you’re in the right place. As a Michigan senior photographer based near Grand Rapids, I’ve worked with students from all over West Michigan, and I know how to help you create a session that feels true to you.

Whether you want something natural, bold, artsy, urban, or a little bit of everything, here are my top senior photo ideas that will help your session shine.

1. Choose a Location That Fits Your Vibe

Michigan has no shortage of beautiful backdrops—beaches, woods, small towns, cities, even hidden gems only locals know.

Some client-favorite locations:

Downtown Grand Rapids – street art, brick walls, and city lights

Grand Haven Beach & Pier – breezy, golden hour beach shots

Prairie Wolf Park in Byron Center – nature trails, tall grass, and dreamy sunsets

Haze Studio in Grandville – perfect for modern, clean indoor portraits

Tip: If you’re searching “senior pictures near me” and want variety, choose a photographer who knows how to guide you through multiple looks in one session.

2. Show Off What Makes You Unique

Let your senior photos tell your story—not someone else’s.

Add personality with things you love:

• Sports gear, instruments, or books

• A thrifted outfit or your favorite kicks

• Your dog or a friend (for a few fun shots)

• Faith, culture, or your college hoodie

Authenticity beats trends every time.

3. Plan Outfits That Make You Feel Confident

What you wear sets the tone. Think variety, texture, and layers. Try one casual outfit and one that’s a little dressier.

Style inspo by setting:

Urban: Denim, neutral tones, statement sneakers

Nature: Earth tones, flowing fabrics, layered textures

Studio: Clean lines, solid colors, soft makeup/hair

Don’t forget: you’ll want outfits you can move in easily for those natural, candid shots.

4. Book Around the Best Light

I always recommend shooting during golden hour—that dreamy time 1–2 hours before sunset. For Michigan, the lighting is best from April through October (with fall colors peaking in late September to mid-October).

Want a sunrise session? Summer mornings are peaceful and glowy.

5. Make It an Experience You’ll Remember

Senior photos shouldn’t feel stiff or awkward. This is a milestone—and it should feel fun.

Bring along:

• A playlist you love

• A friend or family member who hypes you up

• A favorite coffee or snack to make it chill

My job is to guide you through the whole thing so you feel confident and comfortable the entire time.

You only get to be a senior once. Let’s capture who you are right now, with photos you’ll actually love looking back on.
